Martins Vanags

Martins is a photographer and video producer with many years of experience in the field of visual media. Since 2009, he has been working as a teacher and author of methodological materials in the media industry. Teacher at Riga Art and Media Technical School, lecturer at LKA Latvian College of Culture, Fototelpa photography school, Portret.lv photography school and as guest lecturer at many other educational institutions.

His interest in photography arose as a child, watching his father's passion for black and white photography. Later, this interest grew into professional work and hobby. Photography is primarily perceived as technical challenge, including analog photography with film, as well as quest for classical aesthetics in nature and landscape photography.

Photography is an aesthetic reminder of our self and our world's history, the photographer's job is to preserve and shape it as best as possible. Sources of inspiration are Andris Eglītis, Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna and many other authors.

Q&A

  1. How did you start with photo/video?
    I started in photograpy at age of 5, black and white film, looking after my father making images at home. It developed into obsession with technology both film and digital. At age of 30 I started to teach photography in university. In 2018 I went into making educational videos in the field of media and technology. Currently I teach, photograph and produce videos for clients and myself.

    Landscape, nature and travel photography

  3. What inspires you?
    Masters of landscape photography: Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Marc Adamus, Michael Kenna and many other.

  4. What is your dream shoot or project?
    Eagle walk mountain trail in Austria, 10 days of mountains and photography.

  5. What is your best advice to others that want to develop as photographers?
    Work hard 24/7 and few years later you are good. Work all life and at the end you are great!

  1. What is the most important in your bag?
    At least one camera with lens and batteries.
