Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A - a lens for a wide range of subjects

Starting at 16mm, the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 provides a genuinely useful wide-angle perspective for landscapes, city photography, interiors, architecture and group photographs. Zooming through the range gives a natural perspective for street photography, travel and everyday scenes, while the 50mm end provides a tighter field of view well suited to portraits, details and more selective compositions.

This makes the lens suitable as an everyday standard zoom when carrying several lenses is unnecessary or impractical. The broad range is particularly useful for travel, where subjects can quickly change from a wide landscape or building to people, food, street scenes or smaller details.
On Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X cameras, the 16-50mm range corresponds to approximately 24-75mm in full-frame terms. Canon RF APS-C users get an equivalent range of approximately 25.6-80mm.

Constant F2.8 throughout the zoom range

Unlike many compact standard zooms, the maximum aperture remains at F2.8 from 16mm all the way to 50mm. This provides greater control over depth of field and makes it easier to separate a subject from the background.
The large aperture also allows faster shutter speeds when light levels fall, making the lens useful indoors, in the evening and when photographing moving subjects. Because F2.8 remains available throughout the zoom range, exposure and depth-of-field behaviour are also more consistent when changing focal length.

Compact enough for everyday use

Despite its constant F2.8 aperture, the 16-50mm F2.8 has been designed around portability. The Sony E-mount version measures only 79.6 mm in length and weighs 305 g, while using compact 55 mm filters. Nikon Z weighs 315 g, while Fujifilm X and Canon RF versions weigh 305 g.
The combination of a useful zoom range, fast aperture and low weight makes the lens well suited to smaller APS-C camera systems and to photographers who want to keep their everyday or travel setup compact.

Fast VXD autofocus

Autofocus is driven by Tamron's VXD, Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive, linear motor mechanism. It is designed for fast and precise focusing and subject tracking, including subjects with less predictable movement such as children and pets. The quiet focusing operation also makes the 16-50mm F2.8 suitable for hybrid use when switching between still photography and video.

Get closer at any focal length

Close focusing expands the versatility beyond that of a conventional everyday zoom. At 16mm, minimum focusing distance is just 0.15 m, providing a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. At 50mm, minimum focusing distance is 0.29 m with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8.
This makes it possible to move close to food, objects, flowers and everyday details while still showing some of the surrounding environment at the wide end, or use the longer focal length for a tighter composition.

Optical design for a fast standard zoom

The optical construction consists of 14 elements arranged in 10 groups. A seven-blade circular diaphragm helps produce smooth out-of-focus areas when working with the F2.8 aperture and close subject distances. The minimum aperture is F16.

Designed for regular use

Moisture-resistant construction provides additional protection when shooting outdoors, while a fluorine coating on the front element helps protect the lens surface and makes fingerprints, moisture and dirt easier to remove. Tamron has also equipped the front cap with a strap hole, making it easier to secure and handle the cap while working. These features are part of Tamron's updated "Toned Profile Next" lens design.
